Ultraviolet (UV) light represents the band of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths from 10 nm to 400 nm. They are shorter than visible light but longer than X-rays. Long wavelength UV is not considered ionising radiation because its photons do not have the energy to ionise atoms. However, it causes chemical reactions that cause substances to glow or fluoresce. Thus, the chemical and biological effects of UV are much more widespread than simple heating, and many practical applications of UV radiation are made possible by its interaction with organic molecules.

Gas lasers, solid-state lasers and diodes can be used to build machines that emit UV light, and lasers covering the entire UV range can be used. Since the discovery of excimer lasers, it has become possible to utilise intense ultraviolet light. Researchers have explored and discovered the unique properties of this new light source. As various phenomena involving the interaction of UV energy and materials were discovered and optimised, practical applications emerged.

UV laser marking machines are the embodiment of this technology. They are typically designed for 355 UV laser wavelengths and can mark a wide range of materials. They are ideal for "cold marking" applications where laser heat is not suitable. With UVC, materials such as plastics, ceramics and glass can be marked without additives. Thanks to their high beam quality, UVCs can micro-mark electronics, circuit boards and microchips. They are also well suited for solar panels and precision medical device marking (e.g. marking of measuring cylinders and syringes).

Application areas of UV laser marking machines

Used in the medical and pharmaceutical industries to mark plastics and other low heat resistant equipment.

Used in the electronics industry to mark circuit boards and microchips with high quality <1mm font.

advantage

Glass can be marked without the risk of micro-cracking

UVC uses electricity very efficiently

shortcoming

UV laser marking machines are not suitable for deep etching or engraving of metal.

UV laser machines are very expensive.
